Vendor-agnostic AI ready for the edge

Microcontrollers and CPUs eye machine-learning capabilities in collaboration between Mouser Electronics and Edge Impulse

Mouser Electronics and Edge Impulse have engaged in a global partnership, combining machine learning (ML) with edge devices, creating opportunities for new devices, such as low-power microcontroller units (MCUs), Linux central-processing-unit (CPU) targets and graphic processing units (GPUs).

This collaboration brings hardware and artificial intelligence (AI)/ML closer together, combining the platform and tools of Edge Impulse with Mouser's hardware products.

"Our partnership with Edge Impulse is an exciting proposition for both companies, as well as the wider engineering community," states Kevin Hess, senior vice president of marketing, Mouser Electronics. "Its innovative platform is revolutionizing ML at the edge, making it accessible for a wide range of users, from individuals to large corporations. Teaming up with Edge Impulse allows us to provide its users with easy access to the hardware they need, at the scale they desire."

Zach Shelby, CEO and co-founder of Edge Impulse, agrees. "We are thrilled about Edge Impulse's alliance with Mouser Electronics, which accelerates our mission of empowering enterprises and developers worldwide with cutting-edge AI tools. Mouser's global reach and industry-leading distribution services of electronic components make it the perfect partner to help us promote edge AI development to all industries."

The surge in popularity of edge ML and AI offerings in industries such as manufacturing, healthcare and consumer electronics relates to engineers having access to available development platforms and products. As a hardware-agnostic product, Edge Impulse enables engineers and students to leverage a variety of hardware options to expand the range of AI and ML applications.

This global collaboration builds on previous collaborations between the two companies, initially with BrickML, a standalone tool designed by Edge Impulse and manufactured by Reloc. This system-on-module (SoM) allows engineers to develop and deploy ML at the edge and is exclusively distributed through Mouser. In addition to BrickML, Mouser used Edge Impulse in its pest-detection exhibit demonstration, showcased at recent trade shows in Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA).
