Motor Encoders: What They Are and How They Work

Sept. 27, 2024
Motor encoders are rotary encoders adapted to provide information about an electric motor shaft's speed and/or position. Like rotary encoders, motor encoders are most commonly magnetic or optical and produce signals that are either incremental or absolute.

The type of motor involved, the mounting configuration required, and the type of information required by the control system are all important in determining the right motor encoder for your application.  Read on to learn more about choosing the motor encoder you need for your design.
