Industrial devices that have intelligence are a hot topic, and power supplies are no exception. According to Mike Garrick, marketing manager for power supplies at Phoenix Contact USA, users expect the capability to network devices that never had connectivity in the past, and that includes control cabinet uninterruptible power supplies (UPSs).
"Many new high-tech UPSs are out-of-the-box intelligent and require little or no configuration," he explains. "Some of today’s UPSs can transmit basic data over a network such as Ethernet IP or Modbus TCP. In addition, real-time status updates can lead to increased uptime and predictive reliability though scheduled maintenance."
Other advanced devices include units specially designed to use outside of the control cabinet, efficient power supplies that eliminate the need for cooling fans and units that feature an exceedingly high mean time between failure (MTBF).
Compact Power Supply
Delta series power is a single-phase, 24-Vdc DIN-rail mountable 10-A supply that is only 2.5 in wide. The unit provides 150 A for 5 s during overcurrent situations and employs internal output overload, short circuit protection, as well as output relay alarm for under-voltage situations. The unit has an MTBF of 410,000 hours.Â

Emparro67 power supply units are specially designed for use outside of the control cabinet, which lets users either use smaller cabinets or get rid of a cabinet completely. Using Emparro67 converts voltage from 230 Vac to 24 Vdc directly at the load, reducing power loss and energy costs. The unit’s compact and rugged metal housing is fully potted and IP67-sealed. Emparro67s work reliably up to ambient temperatures of 85 °C. The units are available in 4-A and 8-A models.

APN-R Series Power Monitor measures the power usage of a single piece of equipment, an extensive machine system, an area of a plant or an entire facility. The APN-R is also suited for large-scale plant energy management applications, as well as specific equipment monitoring tasks, such as detecting conveyor jams and overloads or identifying dry running pumps caused by clogged intake or discharge lines, impeller cavitation or bearing wear. The APN-R is configured with 0-500-A or 0-2,000-A range flexible coils to measure the load current. The line voltage (up to 600 Vac) connects directly to the transducer; no potential transformer is needed unless the line voltage exceeds 600 V. The APN-R meets UL, CUL and CE approvals.

SNAP-PS5U and SNAP-PS24U are isolated switching power supplies with universal 100- to 250-Vac input for use with the company’s SNAP PAC System hardware. The units can be panel-mounted or (optionally) DIN-rail-mounted, and include a built-in fuse, ON/OFF power switch and LED indicator. The SNAP-PS5U provides 5 Vdc for loads up to 5.0 A for a rack-mounted SNAP PAC I/O processor or rack-mounted controller plus any associated I/O modules. The power supply provides 24 Vdc at 1.25 A to power a SNAP PAC S-Series controller, such as the SNAP-PAC-S1, or to provide loop power for SNAP isolated current loop analog modules.

PS3500 Diagnostic Module continuously monitors the health and efficiency of PS3500 power supplies and primary side power conditions. The module provides real-time diagnostics with configurable warning and alarm levels, and alerts maintenance and operations personnel to irregularities, faults and impending failures. The power supply diagnostic module is modular and hot-swappable, and easily integrates into plant asset management systems through RS485/HART, EDDL or FDT/DTM technologies. The 24-Vdc power supplies are up to 91% efficient and plug directly into a 3- or 6-position chassis/backplane for maximum capacity of 45 A or 90 A of uninterrupted power.

960W, QS40 Dimension power supply series includes 24–28, 36–42, and 48–54 voltage output ranges, reportedly in the smallest form factor available. These units have efficiency ratings up to 94.6%. They can operate with a single-phase input of 100–240 Vac and can deliver 50% output current reserves for up to 4 sec with no change in the output voltage. Other features include load sharing for parallel use, DC-OK contact, remote shutdown and active power factor correction.
Puls; 630/587-9780
PROeco power supplies come in both single- and three-phase units that accept a wide range of ac/dc inputs. An auto-detect feature on each module makes switching between ranges unnecessary. Outputs with 12, 24 or 48 Vdc are available for loads up to 40 A. A tri-colored LED provides local load output status and integral relay contacts provide remote status monitoring for easy detection and diagnosis of power issues. The compact power supplies feature efficiency levels of up to 93% and a MTBF rating of more than 500,000 hours. The units’ operating temperature range is -25 to 50 °C (70 °C with de-rating).
