Fourty-five year old John Jeffers is an example of the American dream that has been slowly dying for decades. A dedicated worker who took a factory job at a plant in Monaca , Pa. spent his entire career moving up to the highest-paid job at the company, only left to now fight to save 700 jobs as the slow holiday season approaches. High prices and the cost of new environmental regulations are threatening the business' future. Mubin S Khan, Canadian-Bangladeshi journalist for The Guardian, believes President Obama's optimistic speeches about the rebirth of manufacturing is only a realization that old dreams die hard. Khan believes a lot of ground has been lost with claims about the U.S. returning to the "Golden Age" — where factories will sustain historical profitability with an abundance of well-paid union jobs. In this article, Khan shares his options about U.S. manufacturing and the troubled promise of reshoring.
