A total of 232 aspiring manufacturing engineers can sleep a little better this summer knowing their financial burden of school loans are significantly lighter or completely paid off by the SME Education Foundation scholarship program. This year SME awarded a total of $600,000 in scholarships.
SME has given more than $8.1 million in scholarships and $1.2 million in awards to high school seniors, two-and four-year college undergraduates, and masters and doctoral degree students since 1998.
"In today's economic climate, scholarships are crucial to students and their chances for viable careers," says Bart A. Aslin, CEO for SME. "As the emerging technologies sector continues to accelerate, companies increasingly dependent on advanced manufacturing technologies want to hire engineers capable of designing and improving products."
Key scholarship programs include Ford Blue Oval Scholarships, Gene Haas Machining Technology Scholarships and for SME Student Chapter members, the Joseph P. Novek Outstanding Student Leader Award and Future Leaders of Manufacturing Scholarship, according to SME.
$120,000 in Family and Director Scholarships was awarded to eight engineering students last month. An additional 224 students were awarded scholarships ranging from $1,000 to $7,000, ($521,500 total), some received multiple awards.
